Sorry. I haven't posted much, lately. Been working a lot of hours and going to school at the same time. Been feeling like the unicorn in this Simpsons Intro.
I heard that Pee Wee Herman is coming to Broadway! NPR aired a really interesting interview with Paul Rubens - the creator of Pee Wee Herman, Friday night. One of my favorite segments of the Pee Wee show was the Penny Cartoon. I wanted to post it for those who have never even heard of Pee Wee. I loved Pee Wee Herman even though I was a bit hold for the show and am so glad he is back with a more adult version.
Penny's approach to animating shorts was to record a little girl... just telling stories, pick the most interesting one and animate to it. It's so much better to work this way than trying to mime to an actor from a film. There is so much more room for creativity. I encourage students to try it! You can record your friends talking... Ardman has used this technique for their shorts for years. Taking the story out of context, but still respecting the delivery and content of the line is where Ardman and the penny cartoons excelled.
"The Modifyers" animated short for Nickelodeon Part 1 of 2. Created by Lynne Naylor and Chris Reccardi. Direction/Music score by Chris Reccardi. Copyright 2007 Nickelodeon.
I never post stuff I personally worked on. Seems like too much of a shameful plug and I am already trying to sell my book here :)
BUT!!! In contrast to all the talk about artists who work in VFX and Animation being abused... I want to state that working at A52 and for the director Andy Hall on this Superbowl spot was one of the most satisfying and professional experiences I have had in quite some time. A52 treats artists with respect. They kept me on board for my full contract, even though I had finished the animation early. I was paid well AND on time (weekly, in fact), fed great food and even gourmet snacks were provided by a chef. The facility was top notch and pipeline was smooth, no B.S.Not to mention the spot came out pretty good, I think. I dig the style.
There are studios that respect the contribution made by artists to shows. They are usually run or headed by an artist though. My advice, keep an eye out for who is at the top. Trickle down is real.
p.s. Credit where it's due!!! I animated the shots after the barbell, Andy did the first shot and Kevin Culhane did the pineapple, trophy and barbell shots.
My bud Jeff Werner works as the art department manager at a studio over in Santa Monica. He got tired of going through manila envelopes and copying resumes to pass them on...every time he had to staff a position to fill. So, he started a website to make the HR people's job easier and make it easier for artists to find work!
Matthew Cruickshank did a re-design on Mickey Mouse and I really dig it!
Based on a Neo-comic style, Mickey exists in a world of transluscent imagery, shape shifting creatures and detailed patterns. With the help of a power-packed Neo-Suit full of gadgets, Mickey encounters extraordinary creatures from many new worlds, with stories and adventures that extend way beyond our galaxy.

Angie here... I had to say something here about Family Dog. It's one of my all-time favorite animations. It just crazy fun (especially when the puppy is so full he can barely move...) but the characters, story and the designs are just so lovely. The staging of the shots are really nice too, like from the dog's POV and watch for the 360 that just never ends... amazing cinematic storytelling. Think of the planning that took in 2D?
So, if you haven't see the pilot? Get it...!!! The pilot was written by Brad Bird, but he left...once it became a full fledged show. So, the actual series isn't as good, in my opinion. It's full of Tim Burton designs, of course - and you can tell when you see the family...Just fantastic.
I have only been able to find the pilot on vhs here on Amazon... (and the cartoon catalog if its still in print?)
Family Dog - the pilot!!!!
I found the Family Dog pilot (Part 1) on You Tube...
Family Dog - pilot part 2
here is the other half of the pilot...
Family Dog - Part 3
Chad Stuart drew this for me, so I wouldn't steal his show jacket...He worked on the original show. - Thanks Chad...I love it! I also have the stuffed animal of family dog thanks to Gavin Moran who ordered it for me on eBay, because I was too scared to use the service. I know, I know I am a total weirdo, but I thought someone would rip me off! I will take a picture of the toy and post it here one day too when I get a moment. I just love that dawg...
