My niece and nephew have lost their minds over this movie. Last Christmas, I got the call to work on Smurfs for the tail-end of production and my 4 year niece said "Wats a smoof?" I was only on the show for about 16 weeks, but this little clip explains a little how sony made them look so pretty. Even their eyelashes are pretty.

Japan's perfect Pop Star - Hatsune Miku 初音ミク
I am working on the Toyota spots they talk about in this story with Hatsune Miku...
I know the Gorillaz did the same thing, but I find it fascinating that so many people would attend a concert with a CG hologram singing??? She sold out a concert this fourth of July in Los Angeles. Saki Fujita provides the voice sample.

Inchworm Animation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUSTIN, TEXAS - April 14, 2011
Inchworm Animation races toward April 25 release on Nintendo DSiWare
It's not a game, and it's not for kids, though artists of all ages will enjoy digging into the creative toolbox unlocked by Inchworm Animation. The much anticipated animation software comes from Bob Sabiston's Flat Black Films, the studio behind the innovative animated films "Waking Life" and "A Scanner Darkly". It is being released on April 25 on Nintendo's DSiWare™ service for 500 Nintendo DSi Points™.
Inchworm features a more powerful set of paint and animation tools than you would expect in such a tiny package. Layers, antialiased and transparent brushes, onionskin, and pattern-making are all included. Some features like underdraw and real-time animation aren't even available in such high-end desktop programs like Adobe Photoshop or Flash.
Using the Nintendo DSi™ Camera, users can easily do short video-recording, stop-motion and time-lapse photography. They can combine these recordings with hand-drawn artwork. One super-cool feature lets you draw on animation loops as they play to create mind-blowing visual effects. Step-by-step interactive tutorials show you the ropes. Finished work can be exported to an SD card in the form of Flash (SWF) files or BMP image sequence.
"Ever since the Nintendo DS™ came out, I've thought there should be a nice animation program for it," says Sabiston. "Inchworm is easy to use but not dumbed-down. That's a fine line to walk, and I erred on the side of 'not dumbed-down.' Some of the functions will be too complicated for younger kids, but the concepts presented are worth learning, I think. It could be a good tool for teaching animation. "
A companion website will allow users to upload and share the work they have created with Inchworm.
Five long years in development, little Inchworm is finally crossing the finish line!

“As long as anyone can remember, the coming of The Undertaker has meant the coming of death. Until one day the grim promise fails and tension builds as the God fearing townsfolk of Backwater wait for someone to die.”
I am so impressed, I decided to post the director's reel here too.

VFX Union Picnic in Santa Monica
At the request of artists on both sides of the border, the IATSE union in Los Angeles and Vancouver will be hosting informational meetings on Sunday February 13. The IA, in sunny Southern California, are hosting an informational picnic in Santa Monica, whereas here in Vancouver with a decidedly cooler clime, IATSE 891′s informational meeting will be held at the Shebeen. This is an opportunity to chat with your fellow artists, compare working conditions, and ask the questions you want answered of the union about the organizing drive, the benefits of a union, employment classifications, etc. Bring along your colleagues, enjoy some food in a relaxed casual atmosphere, and most importantly bring your questions!

Tim Johnson talks about How to Train your Dragon sequel and TV series
This is possibly the most informative interview I have seen with one of the big key frame studios. They usually are more secretive about future directors and projects. Good stuff.
